Way Down South in the Land of Cotton

I do not understand Southerners, or the South in any way shape or form.

I do not understand how certain people, one-hundred-fifty years after a war was fought and lost (by them) over slavery, can maintain that "the South will rise again." Even if I had any sympathy for slave owners, which I do not, nor will I ever, and could actually muster up the bigotry necessary to utter the phrase, "Well, the institution of slavery did form the basis of the Southern economy, and is therefore justifiable grounds for bitterness over the losing the war," Southerners who still stump for the Confederate flag, or the Rebel Yell, or any of that other lousy crap, don't make sense.

Hi. It's 2004. You lost a war in which you were fighting against basic human dignity and rights, and even after the war, for at least one hundred years (under the cloak of the law, anyway), fought tooth and nail to see that not one black person ever got treated fairly.

The South will not rise again, and the fact that you think it will or want it to is almost laughable, if only it didn't make me want to vomit.

I know, not every Southerner is like this. But the general attitude in the South is one of overinflated pride at being from the South. Yes, hurrah. Bully for you. Have another mint julep. Throw your daughter a coming out party. Wear a fluffy dress with petticoats. Call me "miss." Because you are from the Sigh-igh-igh-yowth. And for that, you should be proud.
