lobsterchick's Diaryland Diary

Newsday

Quite a ruckus in my neighborhood today. My sister-in-law was over getting some crap from my mom when a fire truck and ambulance came tearing down the street. We talked about how many older people live near us, and how many ambulances there seemed to be lately.

Then the cop cars started coming, and didn't stop. Finally, there were six of them lined up on the street. My mom said that the man there had diabetes, and that he had probably died. "When you call 911," she reasoned, "they send the fire department, ambulance, and police."

"But six police cars?" I asked. No one else seemed concerned. Then the helicopters started hovering, and neighbors started turning out, and we made a few jokes about how the woman across the street definitely wasn't home, since by that point she would have turned the hose on the mob that had taken over her lawn. There was still much good-natured speculation, with my insisting that something more suspect had happened than just a guy dying from diabetes. We called our next door neighbor, trying to get him to find out what had happened (We're nosy, but we don't want to end up on the news when the crews show up). Before I could convince him, though, Bill, the nosiest of all neighbors came strolling up, looking at once saddened about the news and delighted to be telling it.

"What happened?"

"John drowned."

My response? "They have a pool?" Classy lady.

But yeah. He, as far as we can tell, was in the pool and had some sort of seizure and died. Every local news station was out, setting their tripods up in our yard, but we have yet to see anything of substance. I guess they were just covering their bases in case his wife, who took care of him with his diabetes, had murdered him.

During all this, his children came tearing up in their cars. I felt sorry for them, having to drive through the whole three-ring circus.
